Einsteiger:innen A1:
Welcome to the Standard and Latin Dance Courses at Bielefeld University’s University Sports Program!
Would you like to learn ballroom dancing or expand your existing dance school knowledge? Then you’ve come to the right place!
In our courses, you’ll get to know—and perhaps even fall in love with—Standard and Latin dancing, also often known as ballroom dancing. Once you’ve started, it’s hard to stop. :)
Standard and Latin refer to the two main styles of ballroom dancing. Each style includes five dances. Standard dances are generally danced as a couple in a more closed position, while Latin dances are characterized by a somewhat more open position and a distinct Latin American flair.
If we’ve made you curious, feel free to come and join us!
We look forward to seeing you!
Here is some additional information about how our courses are structured. In general, you can participate either with a dance partner you have found beforehand or on your own.
The dances can also be practiced solo and are still a lot of fun. :)
Partners are often found within the course as well. All you need to dance are two feet! Traditional gender roles are outdated and play no role here!
Beginners A1:
The A1 course is for anyone who wants to discover dancing and has little or no previous dance experience. You will learn the basic steps as well as some figures in the Latin dances Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, and Jive, and in the Standard dances Slow Waltz, Tango, and Quickstep.
Beginners A2:
Building on the A1 course, A2 introduces additional figures and places greater emphasis on technical aspects such as posture and footwork in the various dances. We also cover the basics of three new dances: Slow Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, and Samba. The A2 course is aimed at anyone who has completed the A1 course or already has some dance experience from a dance school or a similar setting.
Advanced F:
The F course is open to anyone who already has substantial dance experience or has successfully completed the A2 course. In addition to more complex figures and sequences, the F course places a strong emphasis on technique, and Paso Doble is introduced as the final dance. Key topics include aspects of both solo and partner dancing, such as balance, posture, and musicality.
To participate actively in the F course, you should be familiar with the figures from A1 and A2 and be able to execute them confidently. The basic steps should be well established, and you should be able to dance them securely to the beat.
As part of the courses, a trip to the ETDS (European Tournament of Dancing Students) is traditionally organized once a year. This is the highlight of the dance semester. Participation in the ETDS is voluntary. Most participants are enthusiastic about the experience and come back year after year. The focus of the tournament is on having fun, so alongside the traditional competitions, there is also plenty of dancing and celebrating just for the fun of it.
As the ETDS approaches, the focus in the F course shifts toward optimal partner presentation, bows, and refining the choreographies. Anyone from the A1 or A2 course who plans to participate in the ETDS is very welcome to join these sessions as well.
Please note: You can register with or without a dance partner.
