Right in the middle of the city and yet surrounded by nature – that’s something you’ll only find in Bielefeld. The Teutoburg Forest/Egge Hills Nature Park begins in Brackwede and stretches all the way to Marsberg in the Sauerland region.
And it is right here in Bielefeld, at the very beginning of the nature park, that we will start this year’s Christmas hike. Following the wintery trails of the nature park, we’ll make our way through the forest, with plenty of ups and downs along the way.
We’ll take in the panoramic views from Fahnenspitze, discover the mysterious Halleluja Quarry, and enjoy the beautiful Längstal valley near Waterboer. The section along the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest is particularly rewarding, offering some beautiful long-distance views.
And shortly afterwards, we’ll take the light rail straight into Bielefeld’s Christmas market, where mulled wine and Speculoos biscuits will already be waiting for us!
Meeting point: Promptly at 9:00 a.m. at the Stadtbahn stop at Bielefeld City Hall (Rathaus), for line 1 towards Brackwede. We’ll take the next available Stadtbahn.
Distance: Circular hike; approx. 14 km, with around 360 m of ascent and descent.
Terrain: Mostly forest trails, forestry tracks and woodland paths.
Duration: Approximately 3–4 hours of actual hiking time, plus breaks.
Difficulty: A reasonable basic level of fitness is required (suitable for beginners!). Sturdy hiking shoes and weatherproof clothing are essential. Please bring enough food and water.
Rest opportunities: Fahnenspitze, a shelter on the ridge, Halleluja Quarry, and the chapel at Haus Salem.
Refreshments: No opportunity to stop for food or drinks along the route.
